West Virginia is known for its rich history in the coal industry, and the New River Gorge is certainly no exception. On this tour we will discover the remains of one of the many abandoned coal mining towns in the area. Your guide will tell you about the history of the booming coal industry in the New River Gorge in the late 1800s to mid 1900s.
Dogs allowed, but must be kept on a leash 6 feet or shorter.
COVID-19 restrictions: Guests agree to wear masks during transport or follow us to the trailhead in their separate vehicles. Exceptions may be made if all guests are part of the same group or if all guests on a tour are fully vaccinated. Masks are not required when outdoors and social distancing can be maintained
Bring your camera and sense of adventure! It’s important to wear proper footwear. We recommend sturdy tennis shoes or hiking shoes. Many of the trials can be wet or muddy. We recommend dressing in layers, including a light coat but heavier coat in cooler months. At times we are in the sun, so a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen may be needed. Insect repellant is not usually necessary.
We provide waters, snacks, hiking poles, and ponchos (in case of rain). We also have a few daypacks if you need one.
Your guide will hike with a First Aid kit, but guests who have allergic reactions should bring their own EpiPen, as we cannot legally carry these.
We require a 50% deposit, which is non refundable, however if you cancel at least 72 hours in advance, FOR ANY REASON, we will hold that deposit and let you use in the future towards any adventure we provide (pending availability). Cancellations within 24 hours of booking will be issued a full refund (as long as activity is booked 7 days in advance). If you must cancel within 72 hours of your trip, your deposit will be forfeited. If your guide cancels the tour (usually due to inclement weather), the full amount of your tour will be refunded or you can choose to reschedule for another time.
